Single Tooth Dental ImplantsOccasionally, a tooth is lost due to an accident or a dental problem. The best way to replace a missing tooth in most cases is with a dental implant. The procedure is highly reliable and easy to tolerate. Removal of a failed natural tooth and reconstruction with a new dental implant can often be performed at the same appointment. If the missing tooth is in the aesthetic zone, such as a front tooth, a temporary tooth can usually be fabricated the same day to avoid the social stigma of a missing front tooth.

Dental implants offer several advantages over replacement options. They look like and function like your natural tooth, first and foremost. As for a single tooth, a dental implant replaces it without sacrificing the health of neighboring teeth. Indeed, as compared with a tooth-supported fixed bridge, a dental implant is superior as it does not damage or rely on nearby “natural” teeth. Furthermore, because a dental implant replaces the root of your tooth, it better assists bone preservation. Implants integrate well with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact.

A single implant can be more beautiful (natural-looking) and easier to maintain than a bridge. For these reasons and more, reach out to your dental professional and evaluate dental implants as the best option for single tooth loss.

Patients all over the San Francisco Bay Area have discovered that there are many advantages to replacing a single missing tooth with an implant supported crown:

  • It looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth
  • It is much more esthetic long term
  • It does not decay
  • There is no need to grind down the adjacent natural teeth
  • The bone is preserved, preventing a visible bony defect
  • It is more hygienic (easier to clean) than a tooth supported bridge

When a single tooth is missing, the two most common treatment options are the traditional tooth supported bridge and an implant supported crown. When a traditional bridge is used to replace a missing tooth, the adjacent teeth are cut down into peg shapes in order to fit the cemented bridge in place.

This method of tooth replacement can be very esthetic and functional for a period of time. However, a tooth supported bridge does not replace the bone that previously surrounded the root. Since there is no longer a root to hold the bone in place, the bone deteriorates, or melts away.
